As a photographer and visual artist, Heleen van de Ven is inspired by beauty worldwide. Her very first portraits were of African kids in the streets of Cape Town. She loved how their rawness was captured and enhanced in a black and white edit with strong contrast. This edit made the connection, depth and emotion stronger.
She’s now taken this foundation and has asked children with African roots and dark skin to model for her. Editing them in an artistic and dark black and white, celebrating their skin tone.
Heleen and her partner have added the gold to their faces before capturing them on camera – either gold paint or gold leaf – in an artistic way, adding a sense of regality and fierceness. During this process, they saw the children’s amazement as they saw themselves in a new light. They became fierce, warriors, kings and queens. True works of art!
It is available as a limited edition (100 prints) and comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
