“My work stems from who I am. I have a deep love for children around the world and see beauty in their uniqueness and diversity. I connect with kids in a very natural way and they feel that. My goal in photography is recognising their beauty and strength and capturing these in each portrait. Each artwork has these characteristics as a foundation.
I get inspired by children around the world and through my background in child portraits, I am now creating true artworks, going beyond a portrait.”
No art school, no photography studies, not even an online course. These artworks are created from an innate vision and talent, combined with a natural love for children and Heleen’s connection to them.
Heleen is an autodidact, both in photography and editing. With a homebase in the Netherlands, having lived in Cape Town and having travelled worldwide, Heleen has a worldly vision when it comes to people, cultures and art.
Her first art exhibitions were in Amsterdam. Creating and growing STUDIO VAN DE VEN & CO is here life-long dream!
The Process of Heleen van de Ven
“Usually, a series starts with the inspiration for one artwork. Looking at one child and then visualising how their uniqueness can come out in a creative and strong way. Then, I build a series around that one work or vision.
Through my work as a child photographer, I have a large network of special and beautiful children. So sometimes, I know who to ask to be my model, and other times I need to search for the right kids. From there, I develop my vision for each artwork before the actual shoot. While capturing the portraits, I am still open to seeing and feeling what other ideas might arise during the collaboration as creating a portrait is a true process between photographer and model. After the shoot, I execute the rest of the process in Lightroom and Photoshop, completing the artwork on my computer.”
